To do business or to want business – what is the difference?

Funny these days, I know lots of “business people” and most say they are in the market place to do business. Well, that’s what they’d like us to believe. The actual fact is most of them want business and there’s a big difference.

When you do business you interact with other businesses. Sometimes work goes your way and sometimes work goes the other way. Perhaps a recommendation, something, anything.

Sadly to say, other businesses tend to want to have their hand in our pockets. Not the other way around. This is wanting business not doing business.

Most good relationships are two way. Both parties benefit or help each other.

This is not so in a “want business” relationship. All the good-will and money always seems to flow one way and usually does.

One way puts a strain on the relationship (if you can call it that) I call it leeching. Sooner or later I’m going to say, “What’s in it for me other than giving you our business, our money.”

Then I’m going to look for alternatives to that service. I think most other real business owners feel like I do and will take similar steps to find two-way relationships rather than leeches.

Handshake, Partnership, Business.

If you do business with me, I’ll do business with you but I will no longer tolerate a one-way-street.

David.
